Chaos in the CBD
Last Night a DJ Saved My Life
New Zealand’s very own and possibly biggest dance music act of quality (sorry Shapeshifter) are brothers Ben and Louis Helliker-Hales aka Chaos In The CBD.
With their ever strengthening production credentials, the brothers have been able to mark themselves out as one of the most eminent underground duos to emerge out of the South Pacific.
The brothers start 2017 with a bang, as their gig calendar fills up and a fresh release is imminent on their new label In Dust We Trust.
Their brand of understated house and techno with a hint of jazz has taken NZ and spread around the world with style. “It’s testament to just how chill we are; we grew up by the beach,” claims Louis, while Ben chimes in: “It's very much a representation of our childhood.” Despite their horizontal approach to studio work, their live sets are on a different level. “Our DJ sets are completely different to how we produce,” says Louis. “We play heavy – not techno heavy – but it’s very rare we’d play a song like that Midnight In Peckham.”
In 2011 they began touring in Europe, deciding to leave Auckland, NZ permanently for better access to their European audience - they moved to Peckham, London in 2012. Although they seem to spend summers here in NZ.
