Deep Fix Recordings is run by some of the scenes most active, collaborative and just all round nice guys out there – Wez Hall, Col Lawton, Robbie Robinson and Brian Jordison all have a long history with the house music scene but have taken their label into orbit in recent times. The family feeling run label is home to new and established artists, including Wez and Col of course, but as a big admirer of what the guys get up to I’m delighted to have a chance to throw a few questions at them.
How we all met came about was around 18 months ago in 2018. Col & Rob were running the House Music Matters radio show every Thursday on local radio station Nova Radio where they both played up and coming music. The show was all about giving local DJs a platform to be heard and our Wez was one of our local talented DJs. Wez reached out to Col they got talking about music and then came into the studio had a mix. We all just hit it off from the start.
When we sat down to discuss setting up the label we wanted to be a label that producers are able to come to and to trust us to give feedback on all demos. Not only to give feedback but to offer help and advice on how to fix tracks in order to be ready for commercial release. Even if the tracks are not a fit for our label we would share links to other labels and friends we know in the music scene. We wanted to build a solid network of good enthusiastic producers who help each other unconditionally, very much like a family.
Creating Deep Fix Recordings brand was the brain child of Wez. Our spiral logo is based from an ancient cave drawings which symbolizes the journey of life. Our name Deep Fix, the “Deep” is reference to the music we produce and “Fix” is reference to our philosophy of helping others.
Wez is our music business specialist who manages the back end of the business activities. Its his expertise that has guided us in having the skills to be able run a label.
Brian soon met Wez and between us all was the love for music but also wanting to help people in music was the thread that bounded us all together from the start. Funny now we are all working together we had crossed paths many times in the past. From our clubbing days to buying records from the same shop to knowing the same people in the music scene in Newcastle, we were all meant to meet and do this at this very moment. I think we have managed to create what we originally set out to do and more as we keep growing month to month.
What were the biggest challenges you had to get to release one?
The biggest challenges we faced initially was preparing a workflow for our release schedule. A lot of back end programming goes into each release from the distribution to the promotion. Getting the timing correct on a lot of different data types is crucial for a successful release launch.
Setting out for release one there are many things to consider such as artwork and continuity as well as the overall branding of our product.
What was the best piece of advice anyone gave you along the way?
(RR) Stay true to yourself, stick to your style and genre. Be proud of who you are and not trying to fit in. This works for me as I try to just be me I like what I like and I play what I like and party how I like haha
(BJ) Never eat yellow snow!!! haha!! Do what you're good at and what makes you happy. Music makes me happy, being part of this music journey makes me happy, so enjoy music to its full potential.
(WH) don’t stop learning, the world is always evolving, keep yourself up to date and how to be part of the music industry. Learn from others and enjoy what you are doing.
(CL) Believe in your music style, makes mistakes, try different sounds but most of all do it because you love it and you're passionate about it.
What makes the Deep Fix Recordings label unique?
(WH) We have a family network with our producers and fans and it’s amazing the support. Everyone talks to each other sharing advice and when we play live streams its great to see all our producers turn up. Our friends and people we have helped is becoming a great network across the globe right now.
(RR) Family that has the artists interests at heart. Its all about the producers and getting to know them and supporting them. I get to call and interview the producers either on zoom or we do live recorded interviews so we can showcase the producer to help them get seen and heard. I think its really important as fans need to connect with the person and the music at the same time.
(CL) We are a great team I love how we listen to all demos and we personally go back to everyone and speak to them about their music. We give advice on the tracks and then suggest labels they could go to if they don't fit with ours. We do really help.
(BJ) The honest way the label is ran, it’s the first real involvement I have had with music industry. Friendships are being made now with people all over the world down to all the great networking we have been doing which is fantastic. I do this with my best friends and I love this journey and being part of this label
What’s your musical policy - what do you look for?
(WH) I think we look for 2 things, Col looks for the emotive/journey of a track while I look for the technical/composition and sound quality. We like the producers to share the same attitude as ourselves and be ambitious and passionate. We are looking for producers who want to grow as producers and help us grow as label so its a 2-way thing.
We do like to build strong EP's so we tend to ask for a number of exclusive tracks so we build a strong release for the producer. Quite often when we are contacted with demos we might only like a certain track. We'd then ask the producer to come back with more ideas to help build the best profile release for the artist. Col & Wez also sometimes like to undertake remix duties for tracks and become part of the producer’s release.
What producers have you had on the label that sum up the style you want best?
(RR) Rob Savage is mine, I love his productions they always have a deep funk style which we will be bringing more to Deep Fix in 2022. Also Sasha plasticpoison what a great guy he is!
(WH) Hard to pick!! For me, music material and support is plasticpoison (Sasha). He is amazing support and very much part of the family. I love Hugehands/James, we've become very good friends this past year and his productions just get better and better! In truth I love all the artists involved with Deep Fix and they all possess the style that sums us up.
(BJ) Well I am the more uplifting music lover, throw a bit disco in and you have me. I love ymp, Sam Tyler and the Rob Savage new EP is off the hook. I am also a fan of Processing Vessel.
(CL) All of them for me haha so hard to pick I have been working with V77NNY this guy makes great tracks, also Jackman Jones we have done a couple of collabs that have done really well and I also love the sounds of Jimmen. We have so many great producers coming up this year so a shout out to everyone on Deep Fix you are all brilliant x
You guys do so much networking - do you think that’s part of the secret to your successes?
Integral part of house music surely???? We love to network, networking will see you grow very quickly if you do it right and you do it for the right reasons.
We want to grow our brand and ethos and the entire things wouldn't exist without the growing family of producers we work with. We work hard to network and showcase our producers getting the music in the right places/hands and presented to a professional standard.
One of the most critical key components of music is meeting people and connecting. We are all very “old school” in our approach as we all met through music. House music has always been about connecting people through music and we believe it always will.
We have to say our networking road trips are the best haha
How do you go through demos, how do you like people to send them, what’s your process - does it involve you all?
We like producers to follow our Website rules on demo submission. The reason for this as you will also know Richie, we want to make sure we get the right music from the start. We ask for exclusive deep music to be sent to our demo inbox in the form of a private link. Anyone not following our guidelines is forwarded a link to them and hopefully they can resubmit their demo to us.
When a demo comes in Col & Wez listen to the track simultaneously and they discuss the tracks and make a decision. If they decide they will sign, they look for the producer on socials such as Facebook or Instagram and setup a live chat to discuss the potential release. At this point its when Deep Fix comes into play and if anything needs fixing, tweaking or plans for more tracks we will discuss.
If all parties are happy with the release we then invite them to join the Deep Fix friends Facebook page and we introduce them to the rest of the producers on the label. We do a nice post welcoming them to the team as we want the new producer to feel the love from us straight from the start.
If the music is not right we do the same process and go directly speak to the artist. We thank them and let them know they can come back anytime with something that might fit better. We like to show that we are very open and approachable as a team and as a label. If we think the music would be a better fit at another label within our vast list of contacts, its at this stage we will make suggestions to the artist.
How long do you plan between signing a track and release?
We run up to 12 months in advance and we are actually closed for demo submissions currently in 2021. We are very grateful and appreciate that producers are happy to wait for their release on Deep Fix.
We are looking to start recruit new demos for 2022 releases around November time but we are always working on new Various Artists Compilations. We do social media posts letting people know we are taking demos for this kind of project.
Once we open for demos it doesn't take long for the first 6/8 months to fill up. When we sign a track we give the date and month so the producer knows how long they will be waiting and when they can start promotion.
Currently we are releasing 3 EP's a month but this will slow down to 2 after the summer. Currently it's a funny time with COVID affecting sales so we are always looking at what is best for releases depending on any changes that might happen in the future.
How do you go about creating the artwork?
Our artwork is created by Wez currently however we are looking for budding artists to get involved in the future. Each cover is custom made in our style which we would describe as quirky, vintage, minimal and alternative. We like the producer to have some input and those are considered during the design process.
What’s been the most successful release to date and your personal favorites?
(CL)Same Beat is our most successful release so far which is my collaboration with Jackman Jones. Personally for me being able to release my own music on my own label is amazing. I loved my Protection EP, the cover is amazing with great work from Wez. On the release it had a Lebedev RU remix which was great to have Leb on Deep Fix but also the meaning of the tracks was very special to me.
As for other producers I play V77NNY - Some Hood (Sen-Sei Stranger Danger remix) a lot which is a brilliant track!
What do you do around a release - promotion etc?
We have a Promo team of 6 influential radio DJs who review our up and coming releases. We feed this information into marketing for the release using all the comments and where the tracks have been played and supported. Our little Super Promo Dream Team are excellent and always pushing our music. Having this team is really important as the feedback helps when pitching our music for release.
We then provide full and teaser video clips, premieres with music blogs, promotions using our House Music Matters radio show which is aired on Mixcloud, Twitch, MOVE Ibiza Radio and we are also part of a new platform called Blast where we showcase up and coming Deep Fix tracks.
We provide the producer with promotional material in the form of artwork, links etc and expect the producer to do their own promo to support release.
Do you have merchandise?
Yes... t-shirts hoodies stickers. We are looking to do more like caps, updating our t-shirts with new designs and keeping it fresh. We give away merch in competitions as well as sending some to good fans and friends as its a good way to say thank you. We are looking to build more on merchandise over the coming months.
What’s the labels point of view on retail sales vs streaming revenue?
Although retail sales generate more revenue for the artists it seems the world is headed for a streaming future.
We are available in both formats and will continue to do so.
Deep Fix Recordings is part of many organizations who fight for a fair share of the streaming revenue from platforms.
What’s the hardest thing you find with releases during the last year or so?
Covid has affected sales due to the scene not being open however streaming has increased. We are still young as a label and we are battling in a crowded scene. We believe if we put out quality music and we remain professional coupled with our passion, we will find our way. We are professional in everything we approach and we do our best to help increase sales with all the promotion we do.
Do you use a promo list and what do you get out of it?
We do have a promo list which is handpicked as we wanted the right people from the start to be part of our team. This is working as we see so many Deep Fix tracks being played or streamed on radio stations. Getting our music played with the right people is what we aim to do.
Can people apply to get on the list?
Yeah on our website deepfixrecordings.com/contacts you can complete the instructions to be on our list which is very easy. We will look at it to make sure it’s good for the label..... You must be on it haha
Do you use a PR company or the services for that a distributor sometimes offers?
We love our distributor who is Paradise Entertainment & Distribution GmbH. We have built up a great rapport with them and they regularly support our work and feature our music on playlists. We seek out independent music blogs to run premieres on releases. This allows us to tap into feedback on new tracks ahead of release. We undertake most of our own PR duties and the big numbers we get from the platforms speak for themselves.
How important to the release is airplay, DJ support, artist self-promotion?
Equal measures we say, as you can see we do our best with promotion and pushing music in the right direction to be heard. What we really want is ambitious producers who understand the power of social media and can help us to promote their music with us. We are not a massive label and we don't have millions of followers so we need to work as a team with every release.
We do look back at the last 12 months releases at the end of the year and we consider those producers who have and have not helped promote. Those who have are active and passionate and will mostly definitely be welcomed back. To be honest if you haven't ticked these boxes for us we won’t sign it. We want dedicated, passionate and ambitious producers working with us.
Behind the scenes we carry out many tasks such as mastering, cover design, videos, promotional packs and pitches to all the platforms. Given the content we generate for the artists we expect them to use this to promote their release.
How does House Music Matters come into the picture for promotion?
We love our radio station... Deep Fix Presents: House Music Matters every Thursday live on Mixcloud, Twitch, Move Ibiza radio and now Blast which is a great platform for promoting Deep Fix music and producers.
We have an amazing global following and we use this opportunity to play and interview our producers bringing them to the wider stage. People get to see and catch up with the team weekly on the live streams and can see we are a great bunch of lads. Our show is friendly and fun and many are interactive in the chatroom and want to be part of the show. We have so many plans for our show with more live streams locally to where we live. Wherever we go we will always be doing something live so our fans can see keep up to date with us while we are on the road. We have just completed an amazing live stream with James Druett aka Hugehands where we interviewed him on our show at his farm followed by a 4 hour live stream. It was brilliant and is the kind of thing we will be doing more of in the future. We are especially excited when we are allowed to travel and play again. Brian bought a great bit of kit for the team which is a Stream Deck which has been a game changer for the overall professional presentation of our radio show.
How much work do you put into social media promotion or paid advertising on social media?
Good networking takes away any need for paid promotion and we are good at networking.....with our radio show and the good work we do on Facebook and Instagram. In the future we may step out and try new strategies but for now we are sticking to our promo plan for the next 6 months and we tend to map out new ideas each year, We already have a few plans around new ways to advertise which will come into play in 2022.
Do you do any events or club nights, or will you once lockdowns are sorted?
Last year we started to take Deep Fix on the road and we managed a few events which went well. Covid came and stopped that but we carried on with live streams and connecting with our audience. We have no idea what the rest of this year will bring and we haven't really tried to push for anything as we know the clubbing scene is closed and could be closed until 2022. We have continued to network and we are currently starting to plan for 2022 with a Deep Fix USA tour with having made so many friends in the US the first Deep Fix tour will happen there. This will be a dream come true for the team so watch this space...
What releases have you got lined up for the year ahead?
We are now Fully booked til 2022 with multiple releases per month
Our summer release schedule is amazing Sen-Sei, Jay Tripwire, Jackman Jones, Sam Tyler, OL3VISION and George Munro. We are so impressed with upcoming releases we can’t wait for everything to drop.
We will be doing another ADE various artists album around October/November time so we will be asking for demos for this project soon. We are also doing a free VA for our labels birthday which is a great idea as the cover for this is also being designed by our fans.
What do you think the big issues ahead are?
Getting back in the clubs when will they return. When will the music scene return in the UK and when it returns will it still exist as it was? Most clubs and pubs will be closed due to lack of funds and support which is worrying for our scene.
We will be adapting to the new music world making sure our label keeps moving forward making sure we keep up to date with new technology and new ways to release music as well as new ways for music to be heard.
Music will always be around what we need to do now as a label is to settle in for the long journey we have coming up.
Any other plans for the near future for the label?
Worldwide is our plan... with all the networking we are ready to travel in 2022 we are going to visit plenty of countries where our producers live to meet them, to play and tour and to make memories as friends.
We want to attract more and more top producers to come and work with us and we have plans to possibly open a studio/venue in the north east of England. Exciting times for us as we are so passionate about what we want to do we all are just bursting to get going.
Where can people follow you?
All the normal places such as Spotify, Traxsource and Beatport links below but the best place is to go onto our web page we have deep fix tv on there as well as all of our releases and up and coming events we will also be putting up all our producer interviews/blogs plenty to read on our page.
