The Sabres of Paradise - Smokebelch II (Beatless Mix)
1993 - Warp Records

With the sad news that electronic pioneering Andy Weatherall passed away this week social media has been awash with tributes and RIP messages. For me I took to the music in remembrance and where else to start than The Sabres of Paradise - Smokebelch II (Beatless Mix).

Warp Records’ release Sabresonic LP, by the The Sabres Of Paradise from 1993 was then and is now one of those moments in music that stays with you forever and sounds as good today as it did back in the student flat I first heard it. Its eerie sounds marked that era of house meets mood that Cafe del Mar and other venues captured. Beautiful music from a legend!

The Sabres of Paradise had their roots in the acid house scene, but later produced more dub-inspired work. Andrew Weatherall formed the group with engineers Jagz Kooner and Gary Burns and became responsible for the Sabresonic warehouse raves. Keith Tenniswood joined the group after meeting Jagz at Phil Perry's Full Circle club.

Sabres broke up in 1995. Weatherall went on to form Two Lone Swordsmen with Tenniswood while Kooner and Burns carried on working together with The Aloof.
