Toko Records | Label Profile

I owe Toko Records so much thanks when I started Untitledmusic. Alec Greenhough was instrumental in getting the printed fanzine we made to record shops across the UK. Without them who knows if we’d be here at all! But, more than that Too Records was and is a label of significant importance in the mid 90’s house music scene in the UK and beyond. Alongside the likes of Paperecordings, Shaboom, Solemusic, Glasgow Underground, Pagan, Slip n Slide and co they created the scene, made it credible in the face of the American dominance and did it all with style and humour.

Toko Records was a tech-house meets deep house label founded by Paul Ingall and A Alec Greenhough (aka Toko Productions). Attaboy were a collaboration of Ingall and Greenhough alongside Si Brad (Cine City, House of 909,  Weekender, Salt City Orchestra, Rubato and many more) - and named after Alec's Dad's hat company Attaboy. That gives you a sense of the connectivity of the scene - the three of them under one guise or another appeared on so many of the coolest labels in that time as a trip to discogs will tell you.

Alec had a long history in record distribution, working for Panther, RTM and Global Distribution (a job that benefitted UM as he took the fanzines with him). Paul was resident at Love To Be before moving on to Sheffield's Republic Nightclub. In 1996 Si Brad began to help run the label as well and continues to run what remains of it today.

In 1998 Toko Records formed sub label Cookhouse - going on to have four releases.

Toko Records continued producing music until 2003, with names like Mettle Music, Pat Barry, The Mavenalli Project adding to the stream of releases from Paul, Alec and Si. The 1999 compilation Soul In Your Spacesuit has a special place in the Untitledmusic history - as we get a thank you for the support in the sleeve notes!
