What is Nostalgic House?

Writtern by Masia (The Godfathers of Deep House SA)

Nostalgic Deep house is a sound of mellow deep vibes, most often associated with The Godfathers of Deep House SA and their DJ’s. With producers such as TimAdeep, Rodney SA, Buddynice, Rosetta D33P, Tshego Deep, Sammie Melanie and more leading the scene into a new era of wider awareness.

What is Nostalgic Deep House?

Nostalgic Deep house is music that is constructed to be ideal for any activities that require sustained focus and concentration while at the same time has a great vibe twist in all the elements used in its composition and production. It is designed and constructed to complement any human environment and surrounding. That’s because the music is present but unobtrusive.

While it may not inspire the same passion and euphoria as other forms of dance music, its calming, soothing influence is very infectious. Nostalgic Deep house often has a soul vocal, and typically uses traditional instruments like piano, drum and bass guitar. Because of this, a lot of nostalgic deep house music has very few artefacts of being machine music. Nostalgic Deep house music is on the vibey and mellow end of the modern dance music spectrum, and has a warm, groovy sound.

It puts you in a ‘state of mind’, no matter what state of mind it is, be it clubbing, dancing, studying, and having billion-dollar deal meetings. As a result, nostalgic deep house music is quite popular among students looking to focus and remain conscientious for long periods. The repetition of rhythms helps students to zone out when revising for exams or even to focus when writing an essay or carrying out some research. It has this subtle element of intellect and greatness attached to it. It talks to the soul.

Our own Youtube and other social media analytics are testimony to that. There are also scientific studies conducted with empirical evidence to support this.

Everything said and done, there are two kinds of music in the universe: good and bad music, nostalgic deep house is one of those genres the good side of music.

Where did Nostalgic Deep House start?

It originated back in 2014 in Pretoria, Brooklyn, where a team of music producers from these genres - deep house, deep-tech, dub-tech and soulful deep house music were put together under one room to create a new kind of music style that would be revolutionary and provide an alternative to the current genres that are popular in South Africa and the rest of the world. This team was put together from all provinces of the country (9) to form what we called The Barcelona of Deep House. Referring to the way the Spanish football team operated in the soccer space. We felt that we needed to put the genre deep house on the map and take it out of its “underground status” and make it mainstream alternative. That gave birth to a new variation of deep house music for the world to consume. As a result we formed an academy that would be dedicated in the production and growth of this new style of music and hopefully lead to further creativity in the music space.

This is the contribution that the nostalgic deep house movement hopes to make in the growth of this limitless industry called music.
